Old Sacramento National Register Listing Update - Draft

Seeking Public Comment

The Old Sacramento Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a National Historic Landmark. The current nomination is extremely brief by today’s standards and focuses only on the Gold Rush era, which overlooks the contributions of underrepresented communities, including indigenous peoples, African Americans, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and immigrant populations.

To address this, with assistance from The City's Department of Economic Development, Preservation Staff secured an underrepresented communities grant through the National Park Service to update the listing, aiming to create a more inclusive historical narrative and market the district to a more diverse audience. This effort supports the City’s broader goal of promoting Old Sacramento as a diverse cultural and heritage destination.
